Article taken from www.thestar.com.my.Hmmph, looks like women smokers are on the rise these days. I guess they're onto the "Hey, we're smoking, therefore we're cool" thinking nowadays. Wait, perhaps it's the government themselves who are promoting cigarettes in an indirect way.
Imagine 20 years ago, ads on cigarettes are less common compared to now. Thru its Tak Nak campaign, the authorities hope to persuade smokers to give up smoking. However, I noticed a slightly funny trend when I read this article.
While the authorities try to promote its Tak Nak campaign since the last few years, the Health Ministry came up with a statistic that female smokers have doubled up. Well, so much for your time and effort on the Tak Nak campaign, but it Tak Boleh work la.
Imho, I think that the authorities are moving in a wrong way. The idea of increasing cigg packs by just 10% to stop smokers from buying them are just embarassing. Just try to imagine how a rise of 40cents per pack would discourage smokers to stop buying them. Even with toll prices increasing every year, motorists still pay to use them. Dun argue with me that roads are a neccessity while ciggarettes are not. Ask a smoker and you'll know the answer.
Well, this is different in other countries. For example, a pack of 20's in Australia costs about Aud10 per pack. That is expensive and worth considering about. Being a casual smoker myself, a rise of a mere 40cents per pack wouldn't even stop me from buying it. Prolly it will make me and some other smokers bitch about for a short while but I can guarentee you that it wouldn't stop us from smoking.
Therefore, I would declare that the efforts by specific authorities in campaign Tak Nak is not going well. Statistics tell for themselves. Perhaps you guys should try a different approach this time around.

Ya, what's RM 0.40 when we can afford to spend AUD 8.00 for just ONE MEAL?
It's time to wake up MALAYSIA!!
you've got a good point there, about the increment of ciggie prices vs. toll rates.
but i don't think the failure of operasi tak nak has caused the amount of female smokers to rise...? i doubt it would have such an impact on a certain group of ppl only -- i'm sure it would affect all malaysians as a whole.
maybe there's another reason to such an alarming stat for female smokers... could it be the stress caused by the lack of eligible men in the country? :P
Nah, I think it's about the raising of self-awareness among women in Msia. Haha.
I TAK NAK stop smoking. Hahaha. 40cents, I'd eat 4 sweets lesser. Thats all. Good effort by Bolehland.
